Installations

Modern, compliant consumer units — often the single biggest safety upgrade.

If your home still has an old rewireable fusebox or a plastic consumer unit, upgrading it is usually the single most effective safety improvement you can make — and it's quicker than most people expect.

Why It Matters

Old fuseboxes don't trip when they should.

Rewireable fuse carriers and older plastic consumer units lack modern RCD and RCBO protection, which is what actually cuts power fast enough to prevent a shock or fire in a fault condition. Metal-enclosed, RCBO-protected consumer units have been the standard since UK wiring regulations changed in 2016 — and it's one of the clearest "before and after" safety upgrades in electrical work.

We fit modern metal-clad consumer units with individual RCBO protection per circuit (so one fault doesn't knock out the whole house), plus surge protection where it's appropriate for the property.

  • Metal-enclosed consumer unit, as required by current regulations
  • Individual RCBO protection per circuit
  • Surge protection device (SPD) fitted where appropriate
  • Full circuit testing before and after
  • Electrical Installation Certificate issued on completion

How It Works

Usually done in a single day.

Assess the existing board

We check circuit count, cable condition and whether anything else needs addressing first.

Power off & old board removed

Supply is isolated safely — expect a few hours without power on the day.

New unit fitted & wired

Metal-clad unit installed with RCBOs per circuit and labelled clearly.

Tested & certified

Every circuit tested before we hand back a working certified installation.

Common Questions

FAQs

How long does a fuseboard upgrade take?
Most domestic upgrades are done in a single day, sometimes half a day for smaller properties with fewer circuits.
Will the power be off all day?
Only while the old board is disconnected and the new one wired in — typically a few hours, not the whole day.
Is my old fusebox actually unsafe?
Not necessarily dangerous by itself, but rewireable fuses and boards without RCD protection don't offer the same protection against shocks and fires as a modern RCBO consumer unit. We'll give you an honest assessment rather than pressure you into an upgrade you don't need.
Do I need building control sign-off?
Consumer unit changes are notifiable work under Part P. We handle the certification and notification as part of the job.
